Set Among Kings

Genre: Non-magical Fantasy

Word Count: 89,000

Status: Pitching/querying

Between the olive and almond groves of Elsharron, Kedar lives by the rules of the streets: guard your favorite gutter, and never go with a Promiser. But what if the king makes a promise?

After his trial for stealing ends with a shocking invitation to live with the king, Kedar cautiously accepts, hoping to find a way to rescue his street friends from near starvation and the constant threat of the underground slave trade. Kedar still has scars from the last time he believed a promise, however, and the nobles are outraged at the scandal of common blood soiling their limestone halls. Kedar’s friends are now far away, and palace life isn’t as comfortable as he thought it might be—or as safe.

Lord Asaph, the king’s chief attendant, is familiar with his sovereign’s penchant for scandals, but he never suspected the king would take in a gutter boy. To Asaph’s consternation, the king assigns him to attend the boy, whose impish nature and lack of decorum make Asaph look like a fool. Torn between his pride and loyalty to the king, he takes matters into his own hands, determined to regain his former exalted position and safeguard the interests of his king.

But only a gutter boy can recognize the slave ring lurking in the heart of the palace.
